St Austell’s own it, Rick and Jill Stein tenant it, the food is honest and very good, the atmosphere is lively. What are we waiting for?

It could be the blueprint for how a good country inn should be. Come for the exceptional Sunday lunch and the atmosphere - it's unpretentious and authentic, with locals rubbing shoulders with walkers and holiday makers. The food, as expected when Rick Stein is involved, doesn't miss a beat. We're not talking gastropub or fine dining but good honest dishes cooked well – scampi in the basket, rump steak and chips, sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream. The merry bar is where the locals down pints of Tribute – the pub is owned by the St Austell Brewery. There's a wood-burner for winter evenings and a big garden for sunny days. The much missed canine star of Rick's TV shows would have loved a trip here, and no doubt have been thrilled beer on offer – Chalky's Bite.
