This rustic pub on a dreamy island would be heaven for shipwrecked souls – huge views, excellent food and delicious ales

You cross the seven seas, wash up on a tiny island, follow a footpath up a forested hill, then discover this quirky pub and realise you’re exactly where you want to be. Inside, wood panels, old settles and a wood-burner in the big stone fireplace give a lovely earthy feel. Well-kept Cornish ales wait at the bar, so order a pint, carry it onto the terrace, then lose your gaze in the magnificent view that shoots across the shimmering sea to St Mary’s beyond. There’s good pub grub, too: hearty ploughman’s, crab sandwiches, tasty pies, freshly caught fish. Emily and Dominic orchestrate it all brilliantly – fire pits, live music, quiz nights and barbecues, even an October film festival. Locals love it, keeping it open a couple of nights a week off season. Paths lead out across the island, its northern point ringed by beaches. A very special place.
