Close to The Chilterns and Ellesborough, golfers and hikers will love this picture perfect village pub with its handsome, seasonal menu

Sat neatly in the heart of Butlers Cross, this attractive 18th century coach house was once the local for nearby Chequers' serving staff, and shares its name with the former owners of the prime minister’s country retreat. Inside is smart and simple, with exposed beams, wooden furniture, politicians' portraits and the odd duck print cushion. You’re spoilt for choice with drinks - the wine list is heaving, and the ales are local (Tring’s Side Pocket is on tap) - while head chef Dan's menu champions local produce and keeps things seasonal. In the warmer months tuck into sea trout, chicory and Jersey royals on the sun terrace, and in winter nestle next to the fire and order the Kings Farm sausage and mash; hearty and warming. Finish with a warm chocolate pot or a large glass of red, then walk it off with a jaunt around the Chilterns. Divine.

  • The Russell Arms is the closest pub to Chequers, a 12th Century house that has been the country retreat of the Prime Minister since 1921. Villagers & visitors to Butler's Cross have been enjoying a convivial welcome at the village pub since 1784.
  • Originally called The Cross & The Golden Cross, the pub was soon renamed after the Russell family who owned Chequers from 1715 to the late 19th Century.
  • Situated only 1.7 miles from Wendover Rail Station, which is on the mainline from London Marylebone, and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Russell Arms is a popular start, stop off or finish for many walkers. Climbing Coombe Hill is a must!
  • Wendover is a bustling market town with plenty of independent cafes, antiques and gift shops. Aces High Aviation Gallery specialises in Autographed Aviation & Military Fine Art and is well worth a visit.
  • We can point you to two world famous Museums, the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden and The Natural History Museum in Tring which is superb. College Lake Nature Reserve, also in Tring, is a firm family favourite.
  • For those visiting with young families, the village playground is just over the road from the pub and an excellent way to use up excess energy before sitting down for lunch.
