The spruced-up Pheasant is still a cracking old pub with a big reputation, thanks to its young owner Jack. Choose from the 50 gins and 30 whiskies in the well-stocked bar, often bustling with locals and jockeys, and sink into a deep armchair in the cosy snug with open fires and board games. The food is classic British with a regularly changing menu. Sunday roasts are a treat or opt for Cornish cod with clam and mussel ragout, followed by pear and winter berry crumble with vanilla custard. There's a full vegan menu too, with the likes of miso-marinated aubergine with roast squash, then vegan sticky toffee pudding. For parties of up to twenty guests, there's the beautiful upstairs dining room. Head out for a woodland walk at Welford Park (four miles), antique shopping in Hungerford (a seven-minute drive) and Newbury races (11 miles).

  • Hungerford is best known today as a thriving hub for antique shops and fairs. Just four miles from us, it is also home to several authentic country outfitters, , and is a good embarkation point for narrowboat trips along the Kennet and Avon Canal.
  • Highcle Castle is a local landmark whose fame went global with its casting in TV’s Downton Abbey, the Victorian-era Highclere Castle is set in 1,000 acres of sweeping Hampshire parkland designed by the renowned 18th-century gardener Capability Brown.
  • Welford Park, known for its Queen Anne house, is also famous for its snowdrops. The Galanthus Nivalis (snowdrop) display at Welford Park (1st Feb-5th March) is in a beech wood covering approximately 5 acres alongside the River Lambourn.
  • Avebury Stone Circles dating back more than 4,000 years to Neolithic times, three monumental stone circles stand around the Wiltshire village of Avebury. The largest of these is the biggest prehistoric stone circle in the world.
  • The Lambourn Valley, situated 5 miles away, is recognised as one of the major racehorse training centres in the country. With its superb facilities and wide-ranging gallops covering in excess of 500 acres it claims to being the beating heart of UK racing.
