Ingredients from the allotment, beer festivals in the barn, and a keen young couple at the helm at this revitalised village food pub.

Set in a forested fold of countryside, with Emma and Ben at the helm, the Hare & Hounds has a loyal following and a youthful spring in its step – from the dozen-strong cocktail list to the jaunty menu: “the freshest local ingredients we can get our mitts on”. Try Woburn Estate venison steak and a Viking seafood chowder, or grilled octopus, lemon grass and potato salad with bacon crumb, smoked salmon butter and samphire. Hares loom large in the decor – in hats, in ballgowns – and the overall feel is country-casual, while the rambling back garden melts away into the woods. All just right for one of Bedfordshire’s sweetest villages. Woburn and Whipsnade are in striking range, with the Shuttleworth Collection of vintage aircraft just down the lane. You’d never believe you were a 10-minute drive from the A1.

Emma Amery:

  • The Village of Old Warden appeared in the Doomsday book of 1086 as Wardone. The history of The Hare & Hounds is somewhat vague but earliest dates of licensee's date back to the 17th century.
  • Situated a stone's throw from the beautiful Shuttleworth house, grounds & air museum. All of which are open to the public during airshow days. You can find dates and additional information here - http://www.shuttleworth.org
  • Both the Greensand Ridge Walk and the Greensand Cycle Way pass through Old Warden. Old warden is also home to old warden cricket club 'the home of village cricket'.
  • There are many circular walks which fortunately pass by the pub, perfect for stopping for refreshments!
