What used to be a rough-and-ready ale house is now a sweet, neat city pub filled with fresh flowers and manned by young, smiley staff. The style is smart and understated, the tables scrubbed, and ranks of bottles (gin, tequila, whisky) sparkle from the walls. Bath is brimming with good places to eat, but the food right here is very special, with pub classics during the week and traditional roasts on Sundays. Our crab on toast was delicious, as was the cheese board that followed. Find piles of great books to read in the bar area, or flick through the local magazines for news of theatre, art shows and other treats in store. Take a back route to Queen Square, with its boules and artisan markets. Both Bath train station and Thermae Spa are a five-minute walk and it’s ten minutes (uphill) to the sweeping terrace houses of the Royal Crescent
